Theodor Morell (1886 to 1948) was a German medical doctor best known as Adolf Hitler's personal physician. Born in the small Upper Hesse village of Trais-Münzenberg, he studied medicine at Giessen, Heidelberg and Munich, completed his doctorate in 1913 and served as a ship's doctor and then an army battalion medical officer. By 1918 he had his own practice in Berlin, which became fashionable for the treatment of skin and venereal diseases. He was widely known in Germany for unconventional treatments, and from 1936 he treated Hitler with commercial preparations including vitamins and the bacterial preparation Mutaflor, which relieved the dictator's stomach cramps. Morell stayed beside Hitler until the last stages of the Battle of Berlin, and the favour he enjoyed let him grow wealthy through business deals with the Nazi government, though other Nazi leaders dismissed him as a quack. He died in 1948.
