William Morton was the Boston dentist whose public demonstration of ether anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846, in the operating theater since called the Ether Dome, is the most widely credited founding moment of surgical anesthesia. Morton attempted to patent his ether preparation as Letheon, a move that damaged his medical reputation and fed a bitter, decades-long priority dispute with Crawford Long, Horace Wells and Charles Jackson over who deserved credit and compensation.
