A major Parisian teaching hospital formed in 1964 by the merger of two much older institutions: La Pitie, founded in 1612 under the regency of Marie de Medicis as a refuge for the poor, and La Salpetriere, built from 1656 to 1680 on the site of a former royal gunpowder factory as a hospice for poor, elderly and mentally ill women. Salpetriere became a landmark of neurology and psychiatry in the nineteenth century under Jean-Martin Charcot, whose clinical work there helped found modern neurology. Today, as part of Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Paris, it remains a leading center of French academic medicine.
