Abhyanga

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Abhyanga is a form of Ayurvedic therapy consisting of a full body massage, from head to toe, using warm herb infused oil chosen to match the dosha type of the person receiving it. Sesame oil is the traditional base, though Ayurvedic practitioners select or blend other base oils carrying dosha appropriate herbs depending on the condition being addressed. The practice is a core treatment within the Ayurvedic medical tradition of the Indian subcontinent.
