Shiatsu

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork based on concepts drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, including the idea of qi flowing through meridians in the body. Its name literally means finger pressure in Japanese, and its practitioners use techniques including pressure applied with the fingers, thumbs, elbows and palms, along with acupressure and joint manipulation. The practice was popularized in the twentieth century by Tokujiro Namikoshi and developed out of an older Japanese massage method called anma, though there is no scientific evidence that shiatsu prevents or cures any disease, even though some studies suggest it may promote relaxation and general well-being.
