Brigham and Women's Hospital is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts, and one of the two founding members of Mass General Brigham, the largest healthcare provider in Massachusetts. It maintains close to eight hundred beds, functions as a Level I trauma centre, and conducts what is described as the second largest hospital based research program in the world, with an annual research budget of more than six hundred million dollars. The hospital was formed in 1980 through the consolidation of three Harvard affiliated institutions, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, and Boston Hospital for Women, itself an earlier merger of the Boston Lying-In Hospital and the Free Hospital for Women. It is historically notable as the site of the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins, performed by surgeon Joseph Murray in 1954, work for which Murray later won a Nobel Prize.
