The Addiction Research Center was a center of addiction research founded in 1935. It was originally based in Lexington, Kentucky, on the rural campus of the US Public Health Service Hospital, where it shared the campus with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Subjects described as volunteers for its human experimental research were drawn from a pool of felons convicted of drug charges. Dr Harris Isbell was Director of Research from 1945 until 1963. The center became part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 1974, and its clinical research unit and basic science unit moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1979 and 1984. Its research is documented in two books published in 1978, a book of conference proceedings and an annotated bibliography.
