The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to molecular biology research, supported by twenty nine member states along with associate and prospective members, headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany, with additional sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Hinxton, and Rome. It conducts fundamental molecular biology research through more than one hundred and ten independent research groups and service teams, trains scientists and students, develops new instruments and methods, and provides scientific services, including free public databases, to researchers across its member nations. Founded in 1974, it employs roughly one thousand eight hundred staff, and research carried out at the laboratory, including work on embryonic development and cryogenic electron microscopy, has been recognized with Nobel Prizes.
