Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that ear, nose and throat surgeons may use to treat blocked sinuses in patients diagnosed with sinusitis who are not responding to medication. The balloon technology, first cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2005, is an endoscopic, catheter-based system that uses a balloon over a wire catheter to dilate sinus passageways, inflating within the sinus openings to widen the walls of the passageway and restore normal drainage.
