Transactional analysis is a psychoanalytic theory and method of therapy in which social interactions, or transactions, are analyzed to determine the ego state of each communicator, whether parent-like, childlike or adult-like, as a basis for understanding behavior. The approach teaches individuals to modify their ego states to address emotional issues, and unlike Freudian psychoanalysis, which emphasizes unconscious awareness, it concentrates on interpersonal dynamics. Eric Berne developed the concept and paradigm of transactional analysis in the late 1950s.
