Transactional Analysis

Psychotherapy and Behavioral Therapy

Transactional analysis is a psychoanalytic theory and method of therapy in which social interactions, or transactions, are analyzed to determine the ego state of each communicator, whether parent-like, childlike or adult-like, as a basis for understanding behavior. The approach teaches individuals to modify their ego states to address emotional issues, and unlike Freudian psychoanalysis, which emphasizes unconscious awareness, it concentrates on interpersonal dynamics. Eric Berne developed the concept and paradigm of transactional analysis in the late 1950s.

FAQs

Is transactional analysis used only as a form of psychotherapy?

No. It is also applied in counseling, education and organizational development.

No. The International Transactional Analysis Association describes it as a social psychology developed by Eric Berne, and says his theory has grown over the past 60 years to include applications in counseling, education, organizational development and psychotherapy. In each of these fields, practitioners use the same key concepts to help clients, students and organizations analyze and change patterns of interaction that interfere with achieving life aspirations.
