Thrombolysis, also called fibrinolytic therapy, is medication-based treatment that breaks down blood clots that have formed inside blood vessels. It is used in ST elevation heart attacks, in stroke, and in severe cases of venous thromboembolism such as massive pulmonary embolism or extensive deep vein thrombosis, and it plays an important role in restoring blood flow through blocked arteries. Because thrombolytic drugs carry a real risk of serious bleeding, thrombolysis is not appropriate in every situation.
