Thrombolytic therapy, also called fibrinolytic therapy, uses medication to break down blood clots that have formed inside blood vessels, restoring blood flow through a vessel a clot has blocked. It is used to treat ST-elevation myocardial infarction, a type of heart attack, ischemic stroke, and severe venous thromboembolism such as a massive pulmonary embolism or extensive deep vein thrombosis, playing an important role in reperfusion therapy for blocked arteries. Because thrombolytic drugs promote the breakdown of clots throughout the body, not only at the intended site, they carry a risk of serious bleeding that can make thrombolysis unsuitable for some patients.
