Surfactant therapy is the medical administration of pulmonary surfactant obtained from outside the body. Pulmonary surfactant is a soap-like substance made of various lipids, produced naturally by type II alveolar cells in the lung, that reduces surface tension and lines the fluid layer covering the surface of the alveoli.
