Ketogenic diet therapy is a high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate dietary treatment that in conventional medicine is used mainly to treat hard to control epilepsy in children. The diet forces the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrate for fuel; because so little carbohydrate is available, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies, which pass into the brain and substitute for glucose as an energy source.
