Functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) is a psychotherapeutic approach based on clinical behavior analysis that focuses on the therapeutic relationship itself as a means to maximize client change. FAP holds that in-session, contingent responding to a client's target behaviors leads to significant therapeutic improvement, and the therapist's task is to identify interpersonal problems as they occur in session or out of session. Initial treatment goals are set by the therapist and include behaviors matched to the client's own needs for improvement.
