A faradic battery was a nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century medical apparatus designed to create a mild electric shock believed at the time to be therapeutic for conditions affecting the sensitivity of nerves in the muscles and bones. Its name honors both Michael Faraday and Luigi Galvani, and while manufacturers marketed portable versions for both clinical and home use, historians consider the devices to have been of little real medical benefit, working mainly as a placebo.
