Crenotherapy

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Crenotherapy is the therapeutic use of natural mineral waters, drawn from hot springs or other mineral sources, either externally or by drinking, the latter also called hydropinotherapy. Some sources treat the term as interchangeable with balneotherapy, more common in France where balneotherapy is favored in Germany, while others classify crenotherapy as a branch of hydrotherapy specific to mineral waters, with balneotherapy as its external-application half. It descends from ancient bathing and thermal-spring traditions and is recommended today for arthritis, skin conditions and fibromyalgia, though scientific evidence for its effectiveness remains limited.
