Rabies postexposure prophylaxis is the administration of a rabies vaccine after a person has been exposed to the rabies virus, most often through a bite or scratch from an infected animal, in order to prevent the disease from developing. Rabies vaccination must be given either before exposure or within the latent period after exposure, since vaccination begun only after symptoms appear can no longer prevent the disease.
