Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and Behavioral Therapy

Interpersonal psychotherapy, or IPT, is a brief, attachment-focused psychotherapy centered on resolving interpersonal problems and achieving symptomatic recovery, following a highly structured and time-limited approach intended to be completed within twelve to sixteen weeks. It is based on the principle that relationships and life events affect mood and vice versa, and it was developed by Gerald Klerman and Myrna Weissman in the 1970s to treat major depression before being adapted for other mental disorders. IPT is an empirically validated intervention for depressive disorders and is more effective when combined with psychiatric medication.
