Endocarditis is inflammation of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart, and it usually involves the heart valves. Other structures that can be affected include the wall between the heart's lower chambers, the fibrous cords that anchor the heart valves, and the surfaces of implanted cardiac devices. The condition is marked by lesions called vegetations, clumps of platelets, fibrin, and microorganisms that form on affected tissue, most often as a result of infection reaching the heart through the bloodstream.
