Marasmus is a form of severe malnutrition resulting from an overall deficiency of energy intake, distinguishing it from kwashiorkor, in which energy intake is adequate but protein intake is not. It can affect anyone experiencing severe malnutrition but occurs most often in children, and it is defined by body weight falling to less than 62 percent of the expected weight for a person's age. The condition becomes more common before the age of one, while kwashiorkor tends to become more common after eighteen months, though the distinction between the two is not always sharp in practice.
