Scaling and root planing, also known as conventional or non-surgical periodontal therapy or deep cleaning, is a dental procedure involving removal of dental plaque and calculus followed by smoothing, or planing, of the exposed root surfaces to remove cementum or dentine impregnated with calculus, toxins or microorganisms that cause inflammation, helping the periodontium reach remission of periodontal disease.
