Intermittent pneumatic compression is a therapeutic technique that uses a medical device with an air pump connected to inflatable sleeves, gloves or boots to improve venous circulation in a patient's limbs. It is used chiefly to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, together known as venous thromboembolism, in patients with edema or an elevated clotting risk, working by periodically inflating and deflating around the limb to push blood and lymph back toward the heart.
