The Gonzalez regimen is an alternative cancer treatment developed by New York physician Nicholas Gonzalez, building on the work of orthodontist William Donald Kelley, that combines a lifestyle and nutrition overhaul with oral pancreatic enzymes, up to 150 dietary supplement pills a day and twice-daily coffee enemas, on the theory that pancreatic enzymes are the body's main defense against cancer and that disease arises from poor diet, metabolic mismatch, pollution and stress. A clinical trial funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine found patients on the regimen survived an average of 4.3 months compared with 14 months on standard chemotherapy, and the American Cancer Society states there is no convincing evidence it is effective. New York's medical board reprimanded and placed Gonzalez on probation in 1994 for departing from accepted practice, and he lost malpractice suits including a 1997 case that awarded 2.5 million dollars in damages.
