Logotherapy is a form of existential therapy developed by neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, founded on the premise that the primary motivational force of individuals is to find meaning in life. Frankl described it as "the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy" alongside Freud's psychoanalysis and Alfred Adler's individual psychology, basing it on an existential analysis focused on Kierkegaard's will to meaning as opposed to Adler's will to power or Freud's will to pleasure. A short introduction to the system appears in Frankl's best known book, Man's Search for Meaning (1946), in which he describes how his theories helped him survive his experience during the Holocaust and how that experience further developed and reinforced them. A number of logotherapy institutes exist around the world today.
