Nidotherapy, named after nidus (Latin for nest), is an experimental form of psychotherapy described as a collaborative treatment involving the systematic assessment and modification of the environment to minimize the impact of any form of mental disorder on the individual or on society. Recognizing that the physical environment and social context in which someone lives interacts with their personality, nidotherapy first helps a person better understand who they are and the circumstances in which they live, then supports them in a structured way to identify the environment and social milieu that fits them best. Nidotherapeutic interventions can look drastically different from one person to the next, and might include changes to a person's living arrangements, relationships, occupation or physical environment, for example an extraverted person living alone and stricken with loneliness choosing to move into a shared residence, or an introverted person unable to find a quiet place to restore themselves in an overcrowded home instead living alone.
