Psychotherapies that work primarily through the body, physical sensation or trauma-specific reprocessing rather than verbal insight or behavioral rehearsal alone. This includes body-centered psychotherapies (body psychotherapy, somatic experiencing, hakomi, concentrative movement therapy, embodied imagination, brainspotting), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and its bilateral-stimulation trauma-processing approach, and trauma-specific protocols delivered outside standard cognitive-behavioral or internet-delivered channels (narrative exposure therapy, internet interventions for post-traumatic stress). A cognitive-behavioral exposure protocol for trauma, such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy or prolonged exposure therapy, is grouped instead under cognitive and behavioral therapies, since its organizing mechanism is cognitive-behavioral rather than body-based.
