Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation is a fertility treatment that uses medication to induce the development of multiple ovarian follicles, most often as part of in vitro fertilization, so that the resulting eggs can be retrieved for use outside the body. When the follicles are instead left to ovulate naturally, the result is called superovulation, and fertilizing multiple eggs inside the body carries a high risk of multiple pregnancy.
