Carl Ludwig Schleich

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Carl Ludwig Schleich (1859 to 1922) was a German surgeon and writer, born in Stettin and died at Saarow in Brandenburg. A method of regional anaesthesia originates with him. His father was a Stettin eye doctor who had studied under Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach, and his uncle was the surgeon Ernst Küster. He studied medicine in Zurich, Greifswald and Berlin, where he served as assistant to teachers including Bernhard von Langenbeck, Ernst von Bergmann and Rudolf Virchow, and took his doctorate at Greifswald in 1887 under Heinrich Helferich. From 1889 until 1901 he ran a private clinic for gynaecology and surgery in Berlin-Kreuzberg, was named professor in 1899, and from 1900 headed the surgical department of the district hospital in Groß-Lichterfelde. Alongside medicine he wrote popular science and philosophy for periodicals and in 1912 published the book Es läuten die Glocken, which brought him a wide readership.
