Christoph Broelsch was a German surgeon, born in Hanau on 14 September 1944 and died in Düsseldorf on 12 February 2019. He is remembered as a pioneer of liver transplant surgery: in 1989 he performed the first successful liver transplant on a child, a landmark operation in the history of transplantation. His name belongs to the generation of surgeons who turned transplantation of the liver from an experimental procedure into an operation offered to young patients, and the record of his career is the documented first that bears his name.
