Evarts Graham

Evarts Ambrose Graham (1883 to 1957) was an American surgeon. In 1933 he performed the first successful pneumonectomy for lung cancer, working with colleagues Jacob J. Singer, Kenneth Bell and William Adams. In 1924 he developed cholecystography with Warren Henry Cole, the first method for imaging the gallbladder and detecting gallstones. Later, with Ernst Wynder, he conducted research linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer, published in 1950. He chaired the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine for 32 years, from 1919 to 1951.
