Louis Gaston Labat (December 11, 1876 - October 1, 1934) was a Seychellois-born physician and anesthesiologist often called the father of regional anesthesia in America for importing and popularizing regional anesthesia techniques there. He standardized regional anesthesia practice, developed the Labat approach to sciatic nerve block, designed an unbreakable nickel spinal needle, and published the influential 1922 textbook Regional Anesthesia: Its Technic and Clinical Application. He co-founded the American Society of Regional Anesthesia in 1923 and died in New York City from complications following a cholecystectomy.
