Nikolay Sklifosovsky

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Nikolai Vasilyevich Sklifosovsky was a surgeon and physiologist of the nineteenth century, born in 1836 near Dubasari in what is now Transnistria and described in the cited article as Ukrainian of Moldavian origin. He taught medicine in Saint Petersburg, Kyiv and Moscow. In 1870, on the recommendation of the surgeon Nikolay Pirogov, he was invited to head the department of surgery at Kyiv University, but soon left to work at the theatre of the Franco-Prussian war, where about ten thousand wounded passed through his care. He is counted among the founders of the Clinical Town at Devichye Pole in Moscow. The emergency medicine research institute in Moscow, nicknamed Sklif, has carried his name since 1923, and Transnistria issued a silver coin in his honour in 2001. He died in 1904.
