David Hayes Agnew was an American surgeon, anatomist and educator, born in 1818 in Nobleville, Pennsylvania, who took his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838. After a failed iron foundry venture and a few years of country practice he moved to Philadelphia, bought the Philadelphia School of Anatomy in 1852 and later founded the Philadelphia School of Operative Anatomy. During the Civil War he served at Satterlee General Hospital and Hestonville Military Hospital and as consulting surgeon at Mower General Hospital. He held several professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, presided over the American Surgical Association and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and was the chief attending surgeon after President James A. Garfield was shot. Thomas Eakins painted The Agnew Clinic in 1889 to mark his retirement. He died in 1892.
