Johann Friedrich Goercke, also spelled Gehrcke, was a Prussian army surgeon and author who lived from 1750 to 1822. He was born in Sorquitten in East Prussia, today Sorkwity in Poland, and became the personal physician of Frederick II of Prussia. In 1795 he founded the Pépinière, the first academy for Prussian army surgeons, and in 1797 he became chairman of the Prussian Army Medical Corps and of the Berlin Charité. When the University of Berlin was founded in 1809 he became head of its military surgery section. He died at Potsdam. The sources record him chiefly as an organiser and teacher of army surgeons, as the founder of the first Prussian academy for that purpose.
