Antrectomy

Antrectomy, also called distal gastrectomy, is a gastric resection procedure that removes the antrum of the stomach to treat gastric disease causing damage, bleeding, or blockage. It is performed using either the Billroth I or Billroth II reconstruction method, and is often combined with vagotomy to improve its safety and effectiveness. The procedure traces its history to the earliest successful gastric resections in the nineteenth century; while modern antrectomy has high success and low mortality rates, it has become less common as alternative surgical and non-invasive treatments have developed.
