Banding is a medical procedure that uses elastic bands for constriction. It may be used to tie off blood vessels to stop bleeding, as in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices, where the band restricts blood flow to the ligated tissue so that the tissue eventually dies and separates from the supporting tissue, and the same principle underlies banding as a treatment for hemorrhoids.
