Biliopancreatic diversion is a bariatric surgical procedure for severe obesity that reduces the size of the stomach and reroutes the small intestine so that food bypasses most of it, limiting both the amount eaten and the absorption of nutrients. It is often performed together with a duodenal switch, a variant that preserves a portion of the stomach and the pyloric valve. Along with sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, it is one of the main weight-loss operations used when diet and exercise have failed to control severe obesity and its complications.
