Emergency tourniquet

An emergency tourniquet is a cuff like medical device wrapped around a limb proximal to a site of severe trauma and tightened until the blood vessels beneath it are fully occluded, stopping life threatening bleeding. Its design allows rapid application by first responders or by injured people on themselves, making it suitable for use before or during transport to a medical facility. Clinical evidence shows that applying an emergency tourniquet promptly, before a patient goes into shock, is associated with higher survival rates than applying one later or not using one at all.
