Endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the fatty plaque built up inside an artery narrowed by atherosclerosis, most often in the carotid, pulmonary, coronary or femoral arteries, in order to restore circulation. It was first performed in 1946 by the Portuguese surgeon Joao Cid dos Santos, and the first successful carotid artery reconstruction followed in 1951.
