Endoscopic endonasal surgery is a minimally invasive technique used mainly in neurosurgery and otolaryngology, in which a surgeon passes an endoscope through the nose to fix or remove brain defects or tumors at the base of the skull. An otolaryngologist typically performs the initial approach through the nasal cavity and sphenoid bone, after which a neurosurgeon carries out the remainder of the operation, which can involve structures such as the pituitary gland. The use of an endoscope for this kind of transsphenoidal pituitary surgery was first introduced in 1992.
