Gastrostomy

Surgical Procedure

A gastrostomy is the creation of an artificial external opening into the stomach for nutritional support or gastric decompression, typically through an incision in the epigastrium. First devised over a century ago using the open Stamm technique, it can also be performed by a surgical approach, a percutaneous approach guided by interventional radiology, or percutaneous endoscopic or ultrasound-guided gastrostomy.
