Hemorrhoidal Artery Embolization

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids that blocks the abnormal blood flow to the rectal arteries supplying the hemorrhoidal tissue. A catheter is guided under imaging into the superior rectal artery branches, where microcoils or microparticles are deployed to reduce blood supply to the hemorrhoids, causing the tissue to shrink and relieving associated pain, bleeding and swelling; because it avoids direct trauma to the rectal area, it can typically be performed as an outpatient procedure with brief post-procedure monitoring before discharge.
