Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures, most often caused by osteoporosis. A surgeon inserts a small balloon into the fractured vertebra to create a cavity and partially restore its height, then fills the space with bone cement to stabilize the bone. It is a variation of the older vertebroplasty technique, performed as an outpatient procedure by spine surgeons or interventional radiologists.
