Left atrial appendage occlusion, abbreviated LAAO and also referred to as left atrial appendage closure, is a procedure used to reduce the risk of blood clots from the left atrial appendage entering the bloodstream and causing a stroke in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. A device is placed to seal off the appendage, the small pouch off the left atrium where clots most often form in this condition.
