The Norwood procedure is the first of three staged palliative surgeries performed on patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and other complex heart defects involving single ventricle physiology, intended to create a functioning single-ventricle circulation. The first successful Norwood procedure using cardiopulmonary bypass was reported by surgeon William Imon Norwood Jr and colleagues in 1981.
