Off-pump coronary artery bypass, also called beating heart surgery, is a form of coronary artery bypass graft surgery performed while the heart continues to beat, without the use of a heart lung machine. Developed in the early 1990s, it was intended to avoid complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass, and studies have shown a reduction in the release of debris linked to stroke, though the technique is technically demanding for the surgeon.
