Sentinel lymph node biopsy, also called the sentinel node procedure, involves identifying, removing and analyzing the sentinel lymph nodes associated with a particular tumor, the first lymph nodes to which cancer cells are likely to spread. A tracer, either a blue dye or a radioactive substance, is injected near the tumor site and travels to the first drainage location, allowing surgeons to locate and remove the sentinel nodes for laboratory examination to detect cancer cells.
