A total artificial heart is a device implanted to replace a patient's own heart entirely, most often as a bridge to keep the patient alive until a donor heart becomes available for transplantation, though research continues toward a device that could replace the heart permanently. Surgeons Domingo Liotta and Denton A. Cooley performed the first clinical implantation of a total artificial heart on April 4, 1969, at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, when the pneumatically powered device sustained the patient for 64 hours until a donor heart could be transplanted.
